Quick answer: Pick three main colors, start with the dinosaur's largest shapes, then color the background and add a few final details. There is no need to fill every space at once.
A dinosaur page can feel busy when it has plants, rocks and tiny scales. Break it into four short passes. You can stop after any pass and come back later.
1. Choose a small palette
Pick one color for the dinosaur, a darker shade for shadows and one contrasting color for the habitat. For a forest scene, try moss green, deep blue-green and warm sand. For a sunset scene, try rust, plum and pale gold. Test the colors in a margin or on scrap paper first, especially if you are using markers.
2. Color the dinosaur first
Fill the broad parts of the body with a light, even layer. Leave eyes, claws and small markings until later. If your tool allows layering, add a second pass under the belly, behind the legs and where the tail overlaps the body. A single shadow color is enough to make the shapes easier to read.
3. Give the habitat its own colors
Use the background to tell a little story. Green leaves suggest a lush setting; dusty orange rocks make the dinosaur stand out. You can repeat one dinosaur color in a leaf or flower so the page feels connected. Keep the area directly behind the dinosaur lighter or darker than its outline for contrast.
4. Add texture only where it helps
A few short marks can suggest scales, bark or stone. Try dots on the dinosaur's back, lines along a tree trunk or small arcs in the ground. Leave some areas plain. The mix of quiet and detailed spaces gives your eye a place to rest.
Try a two-minute finish
Step away from the page, then look again. Is there one small area that needs a darker edge or a brighter accent? Add that and call it done. Your dinosaur can be any color you imagine.
